An Exclusive Interview with Mr. Kenneth Liang of Team ST Wangan for the Sepang 1000 KM.

I was the privileged one to have a special tete-a-tete with Team ST Wangan's principal, Mr. Kenneth Liang at the center of JDM performance parts, ST Wangan. I gave him a barrage of questions to understand more about managing a team teamwork, how go fast while maintaining reliability and plans for the upcoming Sepang 1000 KM and beyond. The interview is as follows.

The Interview Commences...

Kenneth, thanks for taking the time out from your busy schedule to do this interview and without further ado, I'll move into the first question. Is this your first outing as Team ST Wangan?
Yes it is for Team ST Wangan, but not for Team ST Powered, our counterparts and partner company in Singapore. They did race in the Sepang 1000 KM Race last year.
Prior to this what other racing series have you guys participated in?
ST Powered has been involved with MME (Merdeka Endurance Race) for a few years now. We were also doing Time Attack Challenges and also participated in the Sepang Drag Battle with our ST Wangan Mitsubishi Evolution 9.
What car will you be fielding in for the Sepang 1000 KM?
Team ST Wangan will be fielding our very own Honda Civic EK9 and Team ST Powered will be running with the Civic EG6.
How is the setup like for the car in terms of engine performance and handling?
For starters our cars will be running our own specced B16A engines. Both the EK9 and EG6 will have similar spec engines producing around 200 HP. Our EK9 will be running a A'PEXi Power FC ECU with a RacePack In-Dash datalogger, racing monitor and multifunction meter. ST Powered's EG6 will be running a Motec M800. Our suspension setup will be TEIN Super Racing coilovers with Hard Race adjustable arms and hardened bushes. Our brakes are 6-pot stoppers from Option Motor.

Our list of sponsors for both our cars number a lot. They are (in one long breath) Ogura Racing Clutch, OS Giken Oils, LSD and Final Drive, Stamford Tyres for the Rays Gramlights rims, BRIDE Seats, RacePack Data Logger, Motorola Communication Systems, Motul Oils and Option Motors for the brakes.

What's the most difficult thing for you in managing and running a race team?

Well, for me logistics and timing is an issue that I take very seriously. Parts and lubricants supply is very crucial especially during testing, so the communication between the logistics division and the mechanics must be top notch. We do not want to waste any valuable time as every minute lost is a chance lost for us to improve ourselves as a team.

The competition will be tough for this race. Have you guys thought of any strategies or methods to stay in top contention?
Well, I'd say that since this is our first outing as Team ST Wangan, our main priority is to do our best and to finish the race. Our focus is towards handling instead of having high horsepower figures as we do not want to raise any unnecessary reliability issues..
Besides the Sepang 1000 KM race are you guys involved in other racing series?
For Team ST Wangan, none at the moment.
So what's next for Team ST Wangan?
Well, I'd hope that the team can make it to MME (Merdeka Endurance Race) but it definitely will not be this year. We'd like to review our performance at the Sepang 1000 KM race and take it slowly and one step at a time from there on.
Thank you and all the best for Team ST Wangan for the Sepang  1000 KM in 2010!
Thanks and hope to see you again soon. All the best to you as well.
